There is a little information about the history of London prior to AD 61. First time, London emerged during King Alfred reign who gave the city a government. Subsequently, William 1 treated the city very well. During the reign of Richard 1, the city grew commercially and politically. First time, municipal government system also applied during this reign which is known today as City Corporation. Right for the election of mayor was granted by King John in 1215.
London England history shows that without playing an active role in the wars of the Roses it became the political capital of England. The great power and prosperity was brought in London during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1. But, two great disasters almost completely ruined the city. The great plague in 1665 took some 75000 lives and a great fire in September 1666 lasted approximately five days and virtually destroyed the city. The name of Sir Christopher Wren has huge honor for rebuilding the city. He designed more than 51 churches and restored their grace and charm through his brilliant piece of architectural work.
19th century again proved as the great time for London. The free political institutions and intellectual atmosphere made London a haven for all those persons who were feeling unsafe in their own countries. World War II again brought some dark pages in London history. Air raids destroyed many influential buildings like No. 10 Downing Street, the prime minister's residence; the Inns of Court; Westminster Hall and the Houses of Parliament; St. George's Cathedral; and many more. In twentieth century these entire destructions were removed in planned way with the concept of ‘Green Belt’.
Nowadays, London is one of the biggest cosmopolitan cities in the world. One can find here large group of immigrants especially from commonwealth nations. Large numbers of Hindu temples, Sikh temple and mosques can be easily seen in the city. |
